If you’re considering losing some weight, you may be considering all the options. One of the many ways out there is to have a gastric surgery. Lap band surgery is quickly becoming the most popular way of surgical methods. People hear all about it, but what exactly is this miracle diet?
Well first, it certainly is not a miracle. It does have its many risks involved with it, and a person should not consider this without trying all other methods first. Most doctors will not even consider a person for surgery unless they are around one hundred or so pounds over the ideal weight, they also must have a complete physical, and a psychological evaluation.
Basically the surgery consists of a small incision into the stomach. A tube is placed around the upper portion of the stomach. This tube can be filled and drained with a solution that makes it restrict tighter or loosen up depending on the doctor’s discretion. Too tight and food will not pass through at all causing harm. Too loose and food passes through too quickly, making the surgery a waste of time. The restriction around the upper portion of the stomach makes a separate pouch. Food fills this small pouch and a person feels full on less amounts of food. Also, the band keeps food in the stomach longer before it passes through to the rest of the digestive system. This causes a person to feel full eating less.
On average after surgery a person looses about one and a half to two pounds each week after surgery. More then fifty percent of the weight needed to be lost should be gone within the first year following surgery. People thinking that they are going to miraculously drop twenty pounds a week need to realize that this is simply not the case. You will be losing weight at the same rate as someone who consistently puts effort into eating a little less, or a little healthier while burning more calories.
The reason for undergoing surgery instead of trying another method varies from person to person. However, if a doctor feels that a patient’s health is at risk, and they are not likely to lose the weight any other way due to psychological or physical reasons, this many be the only way to save a person’s life. It should not be done simply for vanity, health issues have to be carefully considered. Age is a determining factor, and with women the fact that they may want to have children in the future is also looked at. If it’s something you are considering the first step is speaking with your family doctor.
